Why Freeze–Thaw Cycles Matter
When water gets trapped in stucco, EIFS, or parging and freezes, it expands. Repeated freeze–thaw cycles can lead to:
- Hairline cracks
- Efflorescence (white salt deposits)
- Delamination (layers separating)
- Spalling (surface chips/flaking)

Pre-Winter Checklist (October–November)
- Walk-around inspection (15–20 min). Note hairline cracks, soft spots, or chalky surfaces—especially around windows/doors and deck-to-wall transitions.
- Seal the gaps. Re-caulk failed joints with an exterior-grade, paintable sealant compatible with stucco/EIFS.
- Clear water paths. Clean gutters/downspouts; add extensions so meltwater discharges 2–3 m from the foundation.
- Grade check. Ensure soil slopes away from the house; top up with clean fill where needed.
- Protect splash zones. Add splash pads or river rock at drip lines to reduce mud/salt splash onto parging.
- Touch-up coating (if applicable). Elastomeric or acrylic coatings help shed moisture—follow manufacturer specs.

Mid-Winter Care (December–March)
- Shovel away from walls. Keep snow from piling against stucco and parging.
- Avoid rock salt on walls. Use sand near walls and calcium chloride on walkways (keep off finishes).
- Watch for new cracks or staining. If you spot fresh cracking, hollow sounds, or discoloration, photograph it and contact us for winter-safe stabilization.
- Vent & drip checks. Make sure dryer/hood vents and kick-out flashings are clear so meltwater is directed away from walls.
Early-Spring Follow-Up (March–April)
- Rinse gently. Hose off accumulated salts and dirt—low pressure only.
- Inspect parging. Look for flaking or separation where splashback was heavy.

Can I patch winter hairline cracks myself?
Yes, if they’re tiny (≈1 mm) and not spreading. Use exterior-grade, paintable sealant; clean and dry the crack, apply, tool smooth, let cure, then repaint if needed. If the crack reopens, book Stucco Repair.
My parging is flaking near the driveway—is that normal?
